Thesis of Patrick Fougeyrollas

The book « Processus de production culturelle du handicap; Contextes sociohistoriques du développement des connaissances dans le champ des différences corporelles et fonctionnelles » constitutes the doctoral thesis of Patrick Fougeyrollas in anthropology.

From an anthropological point of view, Patrick Fougeyrollas, Ph.D, illustrate the need for a systemic analysis of the person/environment interaction to include and intervene on the phenomenon of the production of disabling situations. This work is at the heart of the contemporary international debates concerned with the development of an international classification of the effects of diseases and traumas. It stands as a contribution to the disability rights movement advocating for social change, equality of opportunity and optimal social participation of “different bodies”.

Experiencing functional differences marks the daily life of an increasing portion of the population, but their social consequences, disability, is relative, and changing. Especially, it cannot be deduced from the severity of the impairments and disabilities. Disability does not exist in itself, therefore there cannot be a disabled person status.
